Renters insurance coverage gives you peace of mind

Renters insurance is designed to cover unexpected events, including theft of your personal property and injuries that you are liable for. All renters policies from Progressive come with these four essential coverages included, with customizable coverage limits:

Personal property

Protect your stuff in and outside your residence

Personal property coverage may provide coverage for items such as clothing, electronics, furniture, tools, and appliances. These types of items may be covered against incidents like fire, theft, vandalism, and certain weather events. You may need extra coverage for jewelry, which you can add during the renters insurance quote process.

Example: Your place is burglarized, and your laptop is stolen. Your personal property coverage may reimburse you the cost to replace the computer, up to your policy's limits, minus your deductible.

Liability

A little help if you're deemed at fault

If you're legally responsible for someone's injuries or damage to their property, personal liability coverage for renters may pay for their injuries or damaged property up to the limits of your policy.

Example: You host a party, and one of your guests slips and falls. If you're liable, renters insurance may pay for medical expenses, lost wages, and court/legal fees if you're sued.

Loss of use

Think of it as an allowance while you're displaced

If your place is damaged and uninhabitable due to a covered loss, loss of use coverage may help pay for lodging and grocery expenses (above what you'd normally pay).

Example: Your apartment's kitchen is damaged due to a cooking fire, and you're forced to stay in a hotel for a week during repairs. You may be reimbursed for hotel and dining expenses above what you would normally spend on groceries or dining out up to your coverage's limits.

Medical payments to others

A bit of help to cover someone else's injuries

If someone was injured due to a covered occurrence, medical payments coverage may help pay for their injuries, regardless of who was at fault.

Example: Someone slips on some ice on your front steps. Their wrist was sprained trying to break their fall, and they want you to pay for their x-rays and doctor's visits.

Some items may have special coverage limits, known as "sub-limits." The sub-limit is the maximum amount you can receive for an item, regardless of its value. For instance, personal computers have a sub-limit of $2,500, and tools have a sub-limit of $1,000. If you need more coverage than the sub-limit offers, you may be able to schedule the item separately, also known as "adding a rider," to more fully protect the item.

Is renter's insurance required?

Renters insurance isn't required by law, but your landlord or property management company may require renters insurance as part of your lease agreement. If your personal property is stolen or damaged in a fire, your landlord typically won't cover anything.

But just because renters insurance isn't required doesn't mean you should forego coverage altogether. Renters insurance may be able to help if you need to live elsewhere due to a covered loss or you're deemed liable for someone else's injuries.

Keep in mind that different states have different reasons you may want to consider renters insurance coverage to help protect your belongings due to specific factors in your state.

Does renters insurance cover theft?

Your renters insurance policy's personal property coverage may cover belongings that have been affected by theft and/or damage due to an attempted theft, up to your coverage limit and minus any deductible. This coverage could also extend to belongings that are in your car, storage unit, or even while traveling, though keep in mind your coverage limits may change based on the location of your personal property at the time of occurrence. Does renters insurance cover water damage?

Renters insurance may cover water damage due to a covered event, such as a fire. However, a renters policy would not cover water damage due to flooding. What's the difference between renters/landlord coverage?

Renters insurance is for individuals renting from a landlord or property manager. A renters policy covers your belongings. Landlord insurance is a special type of homeowners insurance that covers the physical structure. If something happens to the building and your stuff gets ruined inside, your landlord's policy may not cover your personal property, and a renters policy would be necessary for coverage. If you're a landlord renting out a home, call 1-855-347-3939 for help with a specialized policy.
