How to Apply

The University at Buffalo offers you the convenience of completing your application completely online. Please review the information below carefully, as our application process is decentralized and each department handles its own admission and application process. Admissions-related questions, or questions about your application should be directed to your department. Department contact information can be found on our list of academic programs.

Step 1: Choose your application.

For most of UB's graduate programs, you can apply directly to UB. However, some programs utilize external national applications. These programs require applicants to submit a supplemental UB application and fee. If you are applying to any of the degree programs listed below, please click on the corresponding link for further application instructions.

The remaining steps on this page may not apply to you if you are applying to one of the programs listed above. If you are not applying to any of the programs listed above, continue to step two.

Step 2: Start your application.

To start your online graduate application, you will need to create an account using an email address and password. Once this is created, it will be associated with all UB applications. Please be sure that the email address you use for this account is active for the duration of the application cycle.

You can partially complete an application and save it to be finalized at a later time. Find your desired program and corresponding application on our list of academic programs.

Step 3: Complete and submit your application for formal review.

Application requirements and deadlines vary by program. All required documents should be uploaded to your online application. If you are applying to multiple programs you will need to upload all required materials to each application.

Double check before submitting. Once you formally submit your UB application, you will not be able to make changes. You will still have access to upload supplemental application materials and check the status of your application, but you will not be able to change your application information.

Step 4: Pay your application fee(s).

A nonrefundable application fee is required for each program you apply to. Application fees vary by program.

After you formally submit your UB application, you will receive an email with instructions on how to pay your program's fee via ePay.

Applicants are required to submit transcripts from every college and university attended. UB does not require official transcripts during the application process. Unofficial copies of transcripts are sufficient. Admitted students are required to submit official transcripts from all schools and will be given specific instructions regarding the submission process.

International Students: Some departments may require you to obtain a transcript evaluation from a third party company. Please check with your department for specific requirements. Please do not mail any official documents unless specifically requested to do so.

Step 7: Receive your admission decision.

Throughout the admission process you can log in to your student status portal for application updates. Faculty members in each department evaluate completed applications and make admission decisions. Once an admission decision has been rendered, you will be notified to log in to your student status portal for information about your admission status, as well as any other associated offers of financial assistance or support. For questions related to admission decisions, please contact your department.
